Screens and Printers Speak Different Colour Languages
Your monitor, phone, and laptop all display colour using RGB — Red, Green, and Blue light, mixed together to create every shade you can see on screen. RGB is an additive colour model: add all three at full intensity and you get white. It has an enormous colour range (called a gamut), which is why digital images can look so eye-wateringly vibrant.Printing works on an entirely different principle. Most commercial printing uses CMYK — Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Key (black) — layered as physical inks on paper or fabric. CMYK is subtractive: the more ink you add, the darker it gets. And crucially, the range of colours printable in CMYK is smaller than what RGB can display on screen.
Certain colours — neon greens, electric blues, vivid oranges — exist in RGB but simply cannot be reproduced with standard printing inks. When your file is converted from RGB to CMYK at the press, those out-of-gamut colours get pulled back to the closest printable equivalent. On a large-format banner or a run of flyers, that shift can be quite noticeable.
Almost every AI image generator — Midjourney, DALL·E, Stable Diffusion, Firefly — outputs files in RGB. They're designed for screens, so they optimise for screen colour. The files are usually JPEG or PNG, often in sRGB colour space, with no embedded print profile.
That's absolutely fine for social graphics, websites, and digital use. For print? It needs a bit of work before it's truly press-ready.

Yes — and if you want to get ahead of it, here's what helps:
- Export at the highest resolution available. Even if the AI tool only gives you 72 dpi, a larger pixel dimension gives us more to work with when upscaling.
- Save as PNG rather than JPEG where possible — PNG is lossless and holds more colour information.
- Note the colours that matter most to you. If there's a specific shade of blue or a branded pink that's critical, tell us. We'll prioritise keeping those as true as possible.
- Don't convert to CMYK yourself in basic software. A poor conversion done early locks in problems that are harder to fix later. Let us handle it with the right tools.
